Exercise – a ‘must do’ at any age
The Adelaide Harriers Athletics Club held their annual ‘Turkey’ Fun Run on the recent King’s Birthday public holiday. This is a 5 kilometre event and my wife Tanya and our girls were all competing as well as Sam (senior trainer Hutt st) and his son Hugo. While it was great to see the kids out there running well, the inspiration for me was a 90yo competitor and his 70+yo wife completing the event. When I asked around I found out that both of these older competitors were long term runners – amazing!
It was good reinforcement to me of the value of life long exercise and the impact this can have on our quality of life. It feels to me like the prevailing culture in our society is that once you get to a ‘certain age’, gentle walking is fine but more than that is ‘for the young people’. I’m happy to lay my cards on the table and say that I totally disagree with this approach and have countless examples of older clients who have obtained an enviable level of fitness and strength through PT and as a consequence are living life to the full!
